Jazz Meets 20th Century Minimalism of Terry Riley

Jazz Meets 20th Century Minimalism of Terry Riley
Saturday: 12/16 7:30-9:30pm
Riley’s classical music comes clean from the mid 1960’s with an eastern raga approach of stripping away the complex sounds of 12-tone serialism, and approaches the music of the people with common single tones layering and expanding outward in ways which audiences can hear and appreciate. Influenced by jazz, his original works involved Chet Baker in Paris, and many jazz artists at the time - Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane - included him as an early influence of innovation. The Who even pay homage to him in their 1971 title Baba O’Riley, which later became the theme song for CSI: New York. How’s that for eclectic appeal?
